Quotes to Inspire: Words from C. S. Lewis

C. S. Lewis was a very wise person, and his quotes are bookmark and phone wallpaper worthy. So here are just a few of my favorites.

Before I get into it, I thought I might tell you a bit more about C. S. Lewis.

C. S. Lewis is my favorite author. Hands down. Why? He was a wonderful man who wrote the iconic masterpiece called The Chronicle’s of Narnia. But he was more than just the author of Narnia. He was quite a funny person and tirelessly responded to many young fans. So much so, that the last letter he wrote, was written the day before he died. A few of the children were young aspiring authors themselves, inspired by his work to write. In fact, looking back, if I could pinpoint the one book that inspired my writing, it would be the Chronicles of Narnia.

Now, enough about that, time for the quotes…

Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one!’

This is SO SO true. With friends, we are connected by similarities and interests.

Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.

People say, “you are who you are when no on is watching’ this is a because there is no one to judge you, or point out mistakes, so if we only put on a facade in front of others, that is not who we truly are.

True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.

One might think that being humble is looking down on yourself and speaking of all your faults. But in trying to be humble, we often loose true humility, for true humility is selflessness and not thinking of yourself.

There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind.

This quote is full of hope, it reminds us to look to the future with optimism, and not let the past drag us back.

Some day, you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.

Ahh, a classic. This quote is from the dedication in The Lion the Which and the Wardrobe. It means that even if we leave our childhood fairytales, one day we will return to these stores that first stirred us at a young age.

Nothing you have not given away will ever really be yours.

There was a scene in Where the Mountain Meets the Moon where a king gives the main character, Minli, a magical paper that has been in his family for years, the paper’s magic makes words appear just when the owner of the paper needs them, the king glances down at the paper and there are the words, “You only loose what you cling too.” That stuck with me, for giving something away is never loosing something.

Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither

The things world of this world are temporary, but if you aim for eternal things, you will have treasure that last forever.

You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.

I think I would be very great friends with C. S. Lewis. (:

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.

This is another quote FULL of optimism and hope, reminding us that it is never to late.

Courage, dear heart

This quote is whispered by Asland to a fearful Lucy while she is enveloped in the darkness of Dark Island. I love this quote so much for the simple strength it carries. This quote is at the beginning of my novel I am writing.

The only palliative is to keep the clean sea breeze of the centuries blowing through our minds, and this can be done only by reading old books.

I love that metaphor, the sea breezes of the centuries. Isn’t that lovely?
